Sci-Fi Data Stream (S-F DS)

"The Engine is a fictional device described in Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift in 1726. It is possibly the earliest known reference to a device in any way resembling a modern computer.^[1] It is a device that generates permutations of word sets. It is found at the Academy of Projectors in Lagado and is described thus by Swift:

“... Every one knew how laborious the usual method is of attaining to arts and sciences; whereas, by his contrivance, the most ignorant person, at a reasonable charge, and with a little bodily labour, might write books in philosophy, poetry, politics, laws, mathematics, and theology, without the least assistance from genius or study.” He then led me to the frame, about the sides, whereof all his pupils stood in ranks. It was twenty feet square, placed in the middle of the room. The superfices was composed of several bits of wood, about the bigness of a die, but some larger than others. They were all linked together by slender wires. These bits of wood were covered, on every square, with paper pasted on them; and on these papers were written all the words of their language, in their several moods, tenses, and declensions; but without any order. The professor then desired me “to observe; for he was going to set his engine at work.” The pupils, at his command, took each of them hold of an iron handle, whereof there were forty fixed round the edges of the frame; and giving them a sudden turn, the whole disposition of the words was entirely changed. He then commanded six-and-thirty of the lads, to read the several lines softly, as they appeared upon the frame; and where they found three or four words together that might make part of a sentence, they dictated to the four remaining boys, who were scribes. This work was repeated three or four times, and at every turn, the engine was so contrived, that the words shifted into new places, as the square bits of wood moved upside down."^[2]

Lancaster B I TW911 (Forward fuselage only) Used as a testbed aircraft from 1946 until was broken up in 1954, TW911's forward fuselage was retained and fitted to the rear fuselage and wings of Avro Lincoln RF342. This hybrid remained airworthy and in experimental use up until 1962. It was later housed at Bournemouth Historic Aircraft Museum (UK) for another 25 years before being dismantled and placed in storage. The Lancaster parts of the hybrid were then purchased by the Flying Heritage Collection of Everett, Washington. The remaining fuselage section was fully restored and is on display there today.

Disturbing, strange sounds. That's exactly what I caught on video while filming and documenting the abandoned Waldeck Mine using the ThruNite TN12 flashlight. The Waldeck Mine is an abandoned gold mine located deep in a forested canyon in the high country. I went there on a stormy night in order to document the mine while reviewing and demonstrating ThruNite's excellent TN12 handheld flashlight. The abandoned mine itself is over 150 years old and still has a lot of awesome yet dangerous timbering in its furthest reaches. There are upper levels in the Waldeck Mine, but I only explored and documented the main haulage tunnel.

Paul and I never imagined finding what we found deep in this abandoned copper mine in Arizona. The Warren-Bisbee Mine's obscure entrance was basically a rabbit hole and didn't look too promising. However, once we gained entry by sliding in on our backs, the tunnels opened up and were surprisingly extensive. One tunnel led us deep into the mine to an inner area where we found -- something. Something impressive. Something rare that I've only seen a few times in abandoned mines over the last seven years or so.

While coming back down from some mines way up north, Paul and I stopped at the abandoned Admiral Aaron Ward Mine and walked down its 4100-foot inclined entry tunnel into the subterranean workings. Once we reached the bottom, we found wide tunnels branching off in all directions in this former silver, copper, and zinc mine. During our five-hour exploration, we found one stope that was unbelievably huge and utterly mind-blowing! We also found deep, flooded areas and bottomless shafts. Various colorful mineral growths and crystal growths appear throughout the mine's tunnels, too. The miners' workshop was still full of spare parts, tools, and other artifacts. Another interesting find was the miners' refuge chamber. A freshwater spring deep in the mine provided us with some of the cleanest and best-tasting water I've ever drank! After five hours of exploring, we decided to call it quits and began the long, arduous hike back up the 4100-foot, inclined entry tunnel to the surface.
